8th Grader Wins MUA’s 6th Annual “Go Green Save Green” Poster Contest

More than 700 students from North Bergen schools participated in the sixth annual “Go Green Save Green” poster contest sponsored by the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority and the Board of Education. Art teachers from all the township schools encouraged students in four levels (grades 1-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12) to create artwork for the contest. Digital art was added to the judging last year.

The contest culminated on Monday, Nov. 27 when the grand prize winner was announced during a pizza and cupcake party at North Bergen High School.

Edwin Ortez Arevalo, an 8th-grader from Fulton Annex, was the grand prize winner and received an iPad for his efforts. Edwin’s artwork now adorns the side of an NBMUA recycling truck that travels through town almost every day. It joins five other trucks bearing the artwork of past contest winners.

The top three winners this year in each category are also featured on the MUA’s annual calendar and received gifts including Kindles. Dozens of other students received honorable mentions in the contest.

NBMUA Upgrades & Improvements Project

Construction of upgrades and improvements to the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority’s Woodcliff Wastewater Treatment Facility, located at 7117 River Road in North Bergen, New Jersey, for the total project cost of $19,892,394 were financed by the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Financing Program (NJEIFP).  The NJEIFP is a State Revolving Fund program jointly administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust (Trust) and uses a combination of funds provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the DEP, and the Trust to provide very low interest loans to borrowers for environmental infrastructure projects.

This project will provide water quality benefits by improving the current operation of the wastewater treatment facility and ensuring that the facility continues to meet or exceed all relevant New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations for residents and businesses in the North Bergen and Guttenberg sewer service area.

State Revolving Fund programs around the nation provide states and communities the resources necessary to maintain and improve the infrastructure protecting our valuable water resources nationwide.
